What is Debt Settlement?

According to some sources...

Debt settlement, also known as debt negotiation, is an approach to addressing unusual debt issues in which the debtor and creditor agree on a reduced balance that will be regarded as payment in full. During the process, debt will increase if you are not making payments and creditors will continue to want payment until settlement is reached

Creditors will not negotiate a reduced balance if consumers continue to make minimum monthly payments. When payments stop, balances continue to grow because of late fees and ongoing interest.

How It Works

Once sufficient funds have been saved, Debt Free negotiates on the borrowers behalf to reduce the overall debt owed to a creditor and then makes the agreed upon reduced payments. Only unsecured debts, such as credit cards, can be handled; some student loans may be eligible, but auto financing and mortgages are not. For the debtor this is one method of paying off debts and avoiding bankruptcy. Debt settlement is generally faster than making minumum payments and less expensive for borrowers than paying interest on the entire balances until debts are paid in full.

Bankruptcy is not the only option. Our goal is to determine the right course for you to take and help you find debt relief with settlement professionals.
